The ancient city of Hegra—known in antiquity as al-Ḥijr—served as the Nabataean kingdom's southern capital, a caravan hub where frankincense and myrrh routes converged before continuing north to Petra. Unlike its Jordanian counterpart, Hegra remained largely untouched by modern tourism until AlUla's 2020 reopening, preserving not only tomb façades but the surrounding archaeological landscape: pre-Islamic inscriptions, Roman fortifications, and Hejaz Railway ruins from Lawrence of Arabia's campaign.
The site spans 52 hectares of desert sandstone, with tomb complexes scattered across five distinct outcrop clusters. Qasr al-Farid—the "Lonely Castle"—stands four stories tall, its façade unfinished, offering rare insight into Nabataean construction techniques. Archaeologists have documented over 130 井 wells and water channels, revealing the hydraulic engineering that sustained a population of 10,000 in the desert. Today's Hegra tour Land Rover experiences navigate terrain ordinary coaches cannot access, following ancient caravan paths between tomb clusters. The classic 4x4 format echoes mid-century archaeological expeditions while covering ground efficiently—crucial in a site where tomb groups lie kilometers apart across open desert. Conservation protocols restrict vehicle access to designated tracks, ensuring the fragile sandstone and archaeological context remain undisturbed. The Land Rover approach bridges heritage interpretation and desert mobility, a format borrowed from East African safari models and adapted to AlUla's archaeological scale.
Visitors encounter three distinct environmental zones: the weathered sandstone massifs housing elite tombs, the packed-sand caravan corridors between outcrops, and the vegetated wadi edges where acacia and desert fauna persist. Rock art panels—some dating to the sixth millennium BCE—appear on exposed cliff faces, predating Nabataean occupation by millennia. The site's northern sector includes Jabal Ithlib's religious precinct, where a monumental triclinium hosted ritual banquets carved into living rock.
